Muhammad was born in 570 AD. Citizen of Mecca. He was a merchant class orphan. Raised by a merchant uncle. He learned communication, travel, and social skills. He unified Arabia into a single religious polity under Islam. He is believed to be a messenger and prophet of God. Muslims considered him as the last prophet sent by God, and the founder of Islam. He also was considered as the one who had been the restorer of an unaltered original monotheistic faith of Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and other prophets. Then he died in Medina, 632 AD. without naming a successor; issue split in followers. After Muhammad's death disagreement broke out over who would be his successor.
Shia-Sunni
Sunni and Shia Islam are the two major denominations of Islam. 75% of the world's Muslims are Sunni and 10–20% are Shia. The story of these two groups lies after Muhammad's death. They disputed over succession to Muhammad as caliph. This led to the battle of Siffin. Today there are differences in religious practice, traditions and customs, often related to jurisprudence. Although all Muslim groups consider the Quran to be divine, Sunni and Shia have different opinions on hadith.
